Cleaning and maintaining a bicycle: how to properly care for the chain, e-bike, and household remedies

Are you the proud owner of a bike and want to make sure it stays in top condition? Regular cleaning and maintenance of your bike are therefore essential. In this article, we’ll give you some useful tips on how to clean and maintain your bike.

Proper bicycle maintenance is very important for removing dirt, dust and other deposits that can build up over time. A clean bike not only looks better, but also performs better and has a longer lifespan. Cleaning and maintaining your bike is therefore hugely important and can even contribute to increased safety.

Below, we’ll give you tips on how to clean and maintain your bike.

How to: Wash your bike

Before you start cleaning your bike, it is important to have the right cleaning products to hand. There are many commercial bike cleaners on the market, but you can also make your own bike cleaner. A simple mixture of water and mild washing-up liquid can be effective. However, be careful not to use harsh cleaning agents, as they could damage the surfaces of your bike.

Let’s start by cleaning the frame. Take a bucket of warm soapy water and a soft sponge or microfibre cloth for cleaning. Pay particular attention to hard-to-reach areas such as corners and joints. Then rinse your bike’s frame thoroughly with clean water.

Now let’s turn our attention to the wheels. It’s best to stand your bike upside down so that the wheels are pointing upwards and can move freely. This makes it easier to reach all areas and allows you to clean your bike properly. Use a sponge or a microfibre cloth to thoroughly clean the rim, the spokes and the hubs. Make sure you also clean the area around the brake pads to ensure optimal braking performance and thus improve safety. For disc brakes, it is best to use brake cleaner. Then rinse the wheels thoroughly with clean water and dry them with a clean cloth.

Cleaning the bike chain

The bike chain is one of the most important components of your bike and requires regular cleaning and maintenance. A dirty bike chain can lead to friction and premature wear. Cleaning the bike chain is therefore extremely important. To clean the chain, you can use special chain cleaners or simple household remedies such as a mixture of water and mild washing-up liquid. Use a brush or cloth to remove the dirt from the bike chain and then rinse it thoroughly. Dry the chain carefully and then apply a high-quality bike oil. This protects the chain from rust and reduces wear and tear thanks to improved smoothness.

Cleaning your bike with a pressure washer

A pressure washer can be a quick and efficient option if you want to clean your bike quickly. However, caution is advised. It is important not to direct the high-pressure jet directly at sensitive parts such as bearings, brakes or electronic components, as this can cause damage. This is particularly important if, for example, you want to clean a road bike. For these bikes, or e-bikes, you should therefore avoid using a high-pressure cleaner. Washing an e-bike can instead be carried out using the manual cleaning methods mentioned above to ensure gentle cleaning. Use the high-pressure cleaner instead to remove coarse dirt and mud from your bike’s tyres, for example.

Once you have done this, it is time to thoroughly clean the remaining parts of your bike. Use the bike cleaner you have made or a mild detergent. Dip the sponge or brush into the cleaning solution and clean all surfaces of your bike, including the handlebars, seat post, pedals and mudguards. Make sure you reach hard-to-access areas to remove any remaining dirt. Particular care is required when cleaning the bike’s drivetrain , as this is very sensitive, especially on e-bikes. Make sure you wring out the cloth thoroughly before you start cleaning.

Once you have thoroughly cleaned the bike, rinse it with clean water to remove all traces of the  cleaning agent. Use either a garden hose or a bucket of clean water. Make sure that no water gets into sensitive parts such as the bottom bracket or the electronic components. Then dry the bike with a clean cloth or leave it to air dry.

Cleaning and oiling the bike chain

Once your bike has dried, you can carry out further maintenance. For the moving parts, for example, you can use a special bicycle lubricant. Apply the lubricant sparingly to the chain, derailleurs, brake mechanisms and other moving parts. This reduces friction and extends the service life of the components. Make sure that no lubricant gets onto the brake pads or brake disc.

In addition to regular cleaning and maintenance of the bike, it is important to check the bike chain regularly and oil it if necessary. A well-lubricated bike chain is crucial for a smooth ride. How often you need to oil it depends on various factors, such as weather conditions and how often you use it. Generally, it is recommended to oil the bike chain every few weeks or after longer rides.

How to oil your bike chain properly: Use a high-quality bicycle oil and apply it sparingly. When searching online using keywords such as “oil bicycle chain home remedies”, the results often recommend various natural oils. However, we tend to advise against these, as they do not lubricate as reliably as high-quality bicycle oils.

Please also note that the popular WD-40 is not a lubricant for bicycle chains or other moving parts. On the contrary, it removes dirt and rust, dissolves grease and repels water. WD-40 is therefore ideal for cleaning and as corrosion protection for your bicycle.

If any of the oil spills and gets onto other parts of your bike, you must remove the bike oil, as it can otherwise leave residues that are very difficult to remove later. Before applying the new oil, you should clean your bike chain and thoroughly remove the old oil and any adhering dirt. Use a special chain cleaner or a cleaning agent to rid the chain of dirt and old lubricant. Then rinse the bicycle chain thoroughly with clean water and allow it to dry completely before applying the new bicycle oil sparingly. Leave it to soak in for a few minutes so that it can penetrate the moving parts. You can then wipe off any excess oil with a clean cloth. Take particular care to ensure that no oil gets onto the brake pads, as this will impair braking performance.
