Characteristics of Analogue and Digital Signal Transmission

Cables transmit information in different ways. The different transmission methods are referred to as signals. A distinction is made between analogue and digital signal transmission. Analogue signals are generally based on a continuous flow of data, while digital signals tend to occur in bursts and therefore need to be temporarily stored. When choosing the right cable for analogue signals, capacitance and resistance must be taken into account. Capacitance should be low, as this reduces signal attenuation and allows longer distances to be covered without signal loss. Resistance should also be low, as this allows more signals to be transmitted. 

Some devices have a built-in digital-to-analogue converter, or DAC. These devices can also be connected using passive cables and adapters that simply transmit the analogue signal. If your device does not have a built-in digital-to-analogue converter, you will need a cable with a DAC, as digital audio signal transmission will otherwise not work.
