Filters
As soon as a device such as a vacuum cleaner appears to be malfunctioning, one wonders what the cause might be. When searching for the problem, it is not uncommon to come across the vacuum cleaner filter that needs to be replaced. It plays an important role and ensures that dirt particles from inside the vacuum cleaner do not escape back outside. You should not wait until the appliance no longer works properly before replacing the filter, but check its functionality regularly. But how often does a vacuum cleaner filter actually need to be changed and how do you find the right replacement for your appliance? After all, there is not just one filter, but a wide range of different models.

With the large selection in our shop, you will find the right replacement filter even for older brand-name appliances and products from Bosch, Siemens, Philips, Dirt Devil, AEG, Rowenta and many others. In the following sections, we will explain in more detail which filters are available and how best to replace them.
What is the filter needed for?
In order to choose the right vhbw filter replacement, it is first important to understand the basic principle of the filter. The (vacuum cleaner) filter ensures that dirt particles do not escape back outside. This refers only to the exhaust air to a limited extent. The dirt that is sucked in can also spread inside the appliance, for example, and damage the motor. So if you want to use the appliance for as long as possible, it is best to ensure that the vacuum cleaner filter is checked regularly. So far, we have only talked about vacuum cleaners. However, the filters described can be found in any device in which air circulates. These include the extractor hood above the cooker, the hairdryer, the humidifier and even construction machinery. It is important to note that most of these devices are not designed to be opened. rel="noopener">extractor hood above the cooker, hairdryers, humidifiers and even construction machinery. It is important to note that most of these devices have not just one filter, but several filters with different functions.
What types of filters are there?
Not all filters are the same – a HEPA filter in a vacuum cleaner, for example, cannot be compared to an activated carbon filter. The difference can be seen in the respective filter grade. Most people are probably familiar with the Hepa filter for vacuum cleaners, as this is the component found in many high-quality and expensive appliances that are designed to ensure particularly clean air. The following overview shows the other filter groups that are available:
- Water filters: These filters are used in fully automatic coffee machines or water pipes. Water filters clean the water that passes through them, removing impurities and limescale. Water filters in coffee machines improve the taste of the coffee and extend the service life of your machine thanks to their cleaning performance.
- Activated carbon air filters: Activated carbon filters are not only used to purify the air, but also to combat odours. As the filter is made of activated carbon, even the smallest odour particles can be neutralised. This means that the filter is not only used in vacuum cleaners. The Electropapa online shop offers models for rel="noopener">ventilation systems (honeycomb activated carbon filters) or extractor hoods.
- Flat pleated filters: Our own brand models are available in the online shop as replacements for Kärcher filters and are available in sets. The advantage of flat pleated filters is that they can be used for both wet and dry vacuuming. This means that it is not necessary to switch between the two processes.
- Cartridge filters: Similar to the previous group, this filter can also be used for wet and dry vacuuming. The two models differ mainly in their shape, with the flat filter requiring less space in the vacuum cleaner. We also offer a replacement for the cartridge filter from Kärcher.
- Air filters: Although many different models – such as the HEPA filter – are often referred to as air filters, they are mainly used in lawnmowers and other motorised machines. After all, this device must also prevent dirt from coming into contact with the engine.
- Metal grease filters: These filters are used in extractor hoods. They are also known as filter mats and separate substances released into the air in the form of grease particles during cooking. The grease filters for extractor hoods are available in various designs for brands such as Bosch, Miele and Whirlpool in our online shop.
- Cone filters: These filters are mostly found in ventilation systems. The name refers to the shape of the filter. They also protect fans or ventilation systems from dirt reaching the motor.
How often should a filter be changed?
The need to change the vacuum cleaner bag is due is usually noticeable when the vacuum cleaner suddenly has reduced suction power. A similar scenario also occurs when the filter needs to be changed. The problem can often be temporarily remedied by first removing the dirt from the filter and cleaning it. After a while, however, complete replacement becomes unavoidable.
It is difficult to say how often this happens. On the one hand, it depends on whether it is a extractor hood filter, a filter for a vacuum cleaner or a completely different model. On the other hand, how often you use the appliance and therefore the filter also plays a role. Even if the appliance is still working properly, you should not delay replacing the filter for too long. Otherwise, dirt particles may no longer be properly absorbed or may settle in the motor. A general rule of thumb is that a filter should be used for 6 to 12 months. After that, it needs to be replaced. However, as described above, the time span depends on several factors and must therefore be determined on an individual basis.
How do you go about replacing it?
The vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter certainly requires different handling than the grease filter for extractor hoods. It is advisable to follow the operating instructions for the appliance. Ensure that all filters are changed regularly. In most cases, there is a specific device into which the new filter is inserted. Models such as the air purifier activated carbon filter often have to be cut to size first so that they can fit into the space provided in the appliance.
It is often helpful not to remove the old filter immediately, but to memorise its position so that you can correctly replace the filter for the extractor hood, vacuum cleaner or even lawnmower. Our website specifies which product series the respective filters are suitable for. This way, you can be sure that you are ordering the right model when you make your purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Every six to twelve months; sooner in dusty environments or with heavy use to maintain air quality and device performance.
All filters are classified as F9 and M. F9 handles medium to fine dust, while M filters are for fine dust.
Filters of dust class L are suitable for low-risk dusts like household dust, sand, or gypsum. M-class filters handle medium-risk dusts such as wood, paint, and metal dust. H-class filters must capture highly hazardous and carcinogenic dusts such as asbestos, mold spores, or mineral fibers.
Replace it every six to twelve months; sooner with heavy use or lots of pet hair, otherwise filtration performance drops.
Every three to six months, because only a clean filter traps dirt reliably and protects the device.
