Le batterie ricaricabili al nichel-metallo idruro (NiMH) sono l'evoluzione di quelle al NiCd. Rispetto a queste ultime, hanno una densità energetica più alta (circa il doppio) a parità di tensione. Grazie alla bassa resistenza elettrica interna, questo tipo di tecnologia è adatta a dispositivi ad alto consumo energetico ma a un costo basso, ad esempio piccole luci o LED, giocattoli, dispositivi audio/video/foto, telefoni, spazzolini e rasoi elettrici, utensili o nel modellismo.
